What Broadband Speed Do You Need for IPTV in the UK?

Good news first: you don't need gigabit broadband for IPTV. What you need is a connection that is steady at the times you watch. Here's how much speed you need, and how the main types of UK broadband compare.
How much speed per screen
- SD: about 5 Mbps.
- HD: about 10 Mbps.
- 4K: about 25 Mbps.
Add those up for the number of screens you'll use at the same time, then leave headroom for phones, laptops and game downloads. A family watching football in 4K in the lounge and HD upstairs needs about 35 Mbps for TV alone, so a 50-70 Mbps connection is comfortable.
UK broadband types compared
Full fibre (FTTP)
The best option for IPTV: fast, stable and low in latency. Available from Openreach-based providers (BT, Sky, TalkTalk, Vodafone, EE, Plusnet) and alternative networks such as Hyperoptic, Community Fibre, CityFibre partners, Gigaclear, Ogi and Fibrus.
Part fibre (FTTC, often sold as “superfast”)
Fibre to the street cabinet, then copper to your home. Speeds of 30-80 Mbps are typical and fine for HD and 4K, but speed drops the further you are from the cabinet.
Virgin Media cable
Fast and generally reliable for IPTV. Evening congestion can occur in busy areas, so a wired connection helps.
4G and 5G home broadband
Works well for HD where signal is strong. Put the router by a window facing the nearest mast, and be aware that speeds vary through the day.
Starlink and satellite broadband
Starlink works well for HD IPTV in rural areas, typically delivering 50 Mbps or more. Heavy rain and obstructions can cause short drops.
How to test your connection properly
- Run the test on the device you watch on, using a speed test app, not your phone in another room.
- Test at the time you usually watch, such as Saturday evening, not at 10am.
- Look at consistency as well as the headline number: several tests that all show 30 Mbps are better than one that shows 200.
- If the result is far below your package speed, test again over Ethernet. If wired is fine, your Wi-Fi is the bottleneck.
Speed is only half the story
Most buffering problems in UK homes come from Wi-Fi, not the broadband line. If your speed is fine but the picture still stutters, our IPTV buffering fixes will help. And if you live somewhere fibre hasn't reached, our United Kingdom IPTV page has tips for rural and island connections.

Frequently asked questions
Is 30 Mbps enough for IPTV?
Yes, for one 4K screen or two to three HD screens, as long as the connection is steady.
Does IPTV use a lot of data?
HD uses roughly 3-4 GB an hour and 4K around 7-10 GB. Most UK home broadband is unlimited, but check if you're on 4G or 5G with a data cap.
